Research Areas

Research Interests

We develop new polymeric materials and complex fluids to address global challenges in healthcare, sustainability, and separations. To do so, we take advantage of the unique properties of nano- and micro-structured fluids and soft solids. For example, we design new routes for noninvasive therapeutic delivery by leveraging the temperature-responsive properties of polymers, and develop cost-competitive solution processing methods to create high-performance electrodes and biomass materials. We also design new techniques, instruments, and analyses for materials characterization, often partnering with national and international laboratories. Current research thrusts include assessing the coatability, injectability and processability of complex fluids via extensional rheometry; employing external fields in unique ways to assemble materials and perform novel separations; developing quantitative structure-property relationships to predict the flow properties and delivery capabilities of self-assembling materials; and improving the performance of biomass-based and recycled materials.
