Nature demonstrates that structural anisotropy dramatically affects mechanical and transport properties. External stimuli, such as physical deformation or magnetic or electric fields, can be used to direct material assembly to mimic this anisotropy or to enhance ordering. We use magneto-rheology to direct self-assembly and to characterize the properties of the resulting materials.
