Release liners protect pressure sensitive adhesives until their final point of usage and are widely used in a spectrum of applications including (but not limited to) labels, tapes, medical, electronics and food packaging. Each application requires that the force needed to delaminate the liner from the adhesive be different and today, little is understood about the fundamental behavior of release liners which control release force. The goal of the project is to use techniques like surface modification, patterning and rheology to understand these fundamentals in order to tune release forces to suit different applications. This project is funded by and involves close collaborations with DOW.
